Math Performance Task
: Statistics
Statistics is the science of collecting or organizing data.It broadly covers Pictograms, Bar graphs, Pie charts, Line graphs, Histograms, Cosmographs, Flow charts, ect. In chapter 16, we went deeper into the learning of the characteristics of the different graphs and learning about the histogram and stem-and-leaf diagram.
Who uses statistics in real life? Well, Journalist and news broadcasters use statistics to make numbers make more sense for their audience, sometimes they use charts to prove points. Sports recruiters use statistics to check out potential athletes.Sports teams also use statistics to prepare for upcoming opponents.
From my personal experience, I do keep track of my expenditure using graphs. They have helped me to have a weekly budget on how much I should spend or save. From this experience I can assure and guarantee that graphs are very useful, if you are able to draw a accurate graph. The graph that I use is a bar graph which I will record the amount of money at the end of the month. After 3 months i will look at the graph again and see how much i will be able to spend for the next 2 months.but before all of this you must first set a goal, of how much you want to save in 3 months. For me, my target is a $100, so if i do not reach my target in 3 months time I will need to save the amount of money left to a $100 in the next 2 months. Although of course you can think about this graph and change it in any way you like.
Singapore Power use graphs? Why? from my opinion I think that it may be because graphs are much easier to read, organize and understand. Thus, the Singapore Power wants to use graphs.
We use graphs in science when we are dealing with difficult and complicated data.
Newspapers also do too use graphs. It is used when the newspapers article is on finance(most of the time).
An example of it is the image shown below.
The horizontal axis shows the percentage of GDP while the vertical axis shows the year when the statistic was collected.
My view on whether Statistics is a means to report situations in an objective manner.Does it always have to present a ‘truthful’ stand or sometimes it lies. I suppose that sometimes statistics lie due to an error or false information.for an example the e-learning bus information there are some errors in them but 98% of it are mostly correct.
Learning Experience
My group can be quite playful at times but when it come to work they can become very concentrated as well, as long as they have someone reminding them of the task at hand.
The strength of my group is in our communication. We can communicate very well and we get into less arguments than other groups. Thus, allowing us to do our work at a much faster pace.
My role in the group was the group leader. At first thought that I was not going to do well as my group seemed so playful compared to the other groups but I soon realised that i was wrong they were much better than I imagined. The credit should go to Mervin as he helped me to reinforce the self discipline in the group, by “helping” Luke ad Ryan to close their Macbooks.
In the future, if faced with a similar project again I would try to remind my group mates to be more disciplined and to appoint a time keeper to keep the group noted about the time left.
